KASTELA, seven small towns (administratively the City of Kastela) in the central Dalmatian littoral, northwest of Split; population 32,284. They stretch in the direction east - west (20-odd km), between the northern coast of the Kastela Gulf in the south, the crests of Trnoscak (472 m), Labinstica (701 m), Opor (602 m) and Kozjak (780 m) in the north and Krban (144 m) in the west. The eastern part of Kastela descends abruptly toward the sea, while the western part consists of a fertile plain (Veliko and Malo Polje; Big and Small Fields). Permanent sources are rare; the source Pantana springs out at the foot of Krban. Winters are mild and wet, and summers warm and dry; summer droughts occur frequently. Kastela are divided into the Upper (Gornja) and the Lower (Donja) Kastela. They consist of seven small towns (stafilic, Novi, Stari, Luksic, Kambelovac, Gomilica and Sucurac). Main crops grown in the Kastela field are vines, fruit and vegetables. In the eastern part are large industrial plants (factory of synthetic materials, ironworks, cement factory etc.). Kastela are located on the main road (M2, E65) and the railroad Split - Knin. In Kastela is also the Split airport (Resnik).
